Reduced antibiotic prescribing guided by CRP testing does not worsen outcomes in nursing home patients

Clinical Question

Can the routine use of point-of-care testing for C-reactive protein safely reduce antibiotic prescribing in nursing homes?

Bottom line

Point-of-care CRP testing in nursing homes may reduce antibiotic prescribing, though this study design is weak. However, this study shows that the reduction in antibiotic prescribing does not increase the likelihood of bad outcomes occurring in untreated patients. 2b

Study design: Randomized controlled trial (nonblinded)

Funding: Industry + govt

Setting: Nursing home/extended care facility

Antibiotic stewardship

I think this study adds to the needed body of evidence leading towards better stewardship of antibiotics to prevent resistance.
