Results of fecal immunochemical tests for colorectal cancer screening not affected by NSAIDs, aspirin, or anticoagulants

Clinical Question

Are the modern fecal immunochemical tests for occult blood in the stool less accurate in patients who are taking aspirin, an anticoagulant, or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug?

Bottom line

The use of aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and oral anticoagulants have no clinically important effects on the positive predictive value of the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) in a screening population. 1a
