Acetaminophen (paracetamol) is no better than placebo for most pain, except maybe tension headache

Question clinique

Is acetaminophen (paracetamol) effective as an analgesic?

L’Essentiel

Despite being discovered in the 1800s and marketed for pain relief since 1950, there are surprisingly few studies of acetaminophen's effectiveness. It is more effective than placebo to provide some pain relief in patients with acute migraine and might help people to a greater extent than placebo (which also works well) with tension-type headache. A single dose is approximately twice as likely as placebo to reduce postpartum perineal pain, and it may be effective - but not as effective as other treatments - for acute renal colic. 1a-
