Conservative treatment of first-degree perineal tears after delivery is a reasonable option

Clinical Question

Do the outcomes of conservative treatment of vaginal or first-degree perineal tears differ from the outcomes after routine suture?

Bottom line

In this small, single-center trial, a strategy of conservative suturing versus routine suturing of first-degree tears did not show any significant differences in the outcomes of wound healing, wound complications, and pain. 1b

Study design: Randomized controlled trial (nonblinded)

Funding: Self-funded or unfunded

Setting: Inpatient (any location)

Conservative treatment vs systematic suturing for perineal t

I found the phrase "conservative suturing" in the Bottom line sentence in the POEM to be confusing - it should have just said "conservative treatment", the phrase used everywhere else in the summary, and in the abstract itself.
