Grant categories

In stage 1 of the application process, you will answer a short questionnaire to help us determine which grant category you are eligible for. You can only apply to one grant category per initiative. If you have questions about the category you’ve been assigned, please contact us at jouleinnovation@cma.ca.

We updated the 2020 grant categories to reflect the CMA’s focus issues, our stakeholders’ needs and the shifting landscape in innovation and health care. The five categories are physician health and wellness, access to care, sustainable health care, health care solutions and emerging physician innovator. You can learn more about each category on the main grants page.

If you are short-listed for stage 2 review for one of the four main categories ― physician health and wellness, access to care, sustainable health care or health care solutions ― but don’t end up receiving a grant in one of those categories, you will be considered for an emerging physician innovator grant.

Emerging physician innovator initiatives must still fit within one of the other grant categories, as they reflect the grant program’s current priority areas. If you are short-listed for stage 2 review but don’t end up receiving a grant in one of those categories, you will then be considered for an emerging physician innovator grant.

Yes. Your practice status at the time of submission is what will be considered.

After the finalists complete the stage 2 forms, the Joule Innovation Council will meet to select the 2020 Joule Innovation grant recipients. All stage 2 finalists will be notified whether or not they have been selected to receive a grant.

Grant recipient questions

No. If you are awarded a Joule Innovation grant, 100% of the equity remains with you ― the physician, learner or physician-led team.

Yes. All Joule Innovation grants have tax implications. Whether the grant is paid directly to the CMA member, affiliated institution, corporation or not-for-profit, the Canada Revenue Agency’s tax regulations apply. If you receive a grant, you will need to declare it in your year-end tax return. Joule will provide you with the necessary documentation to do this. We advise all applicants to speak with their tax specialist before accepting a grant.
