Dr. Julielynn Wong, a 2016 Joule Innovation grant recipient and founder of 3D4MD, was invited to present to the Social Affairs—Science and Technology Senate Committee to discuss the role of robotics, 3D printing and artificial intelligence in the healthcare system.
Dr. Wong proposes that the Canadian government adopt a framework for prioritizing resources for 3D printing in healthcare based on four key principles:
- The solution has the potential to positively impact a large number of people;
- The solution can be crowd-sourced and created using free software to substantially reduce time as well as research and developments investment;
- Quantitative and qualitative evidence to demonstrate that a 3D printed solution is better than existing alternatives;
- The solution can be outsourced outside of hospitals to community settings.
